Chokin Shafik Chokinovich (1912-2003), power engineer, Doctor of Engineering sciences (1954), professor (1956), academician of AS of the KazSSR (1954), honored scientist of the Kazakh SSR (1961). He graduated from the Hydraulic engineering faculty of Omsk agricultural institute (1937). Engineer, head of dep., ch. engineer of the Kazakh republican trust "Kazselelektro" (1937-1943), head of KazFAN sector of the USSR (1943-1944), director of the Kazakh Research Institute of Energy (1944-1988), deputy chairman (1946-1954), chairman of the Department of mineral resources of AS of the KazSSR (1954-1955), academician-secretary of AS of the KazSSR (1955-1962), president of AS of the KazSSR (1964-1967). Since 1988 - honorary director of the Kazakh Research Institute of Energy. He spent a big scientific and organizational work. As president he helped to rise the level of scientific activity of the Academy of sciences, the development of theoretical research and the strengthening of links between science and industry. He developed methods for determining the optimal parameters and modes of operation of hydroelectric power station, advanced strategy and tactics of the Kazakhstan energy (installed capacity, structure and deployment of power plants, etc.), the parameters of the fuel and energy balance (FEB) and Energy of Kazakhstan, way of formation and development of the electricity and water system of the republic as a whole and its major regions, rational scheme and ways of improvement of water system of the republic as a whole and its major regions, rational scheme and ways of improvement of water transfer in Kazakhstan and Siberian rivers to Kazakhstan and Central Asia. He researched and suggested a better method of calculating the river flow regulation, construction of cascade hydropower plants on the rivers Irtysh and B. Almatinka, Kapchagay hydroelectric station on the river Ili, the channel Irtysh - Karaganda. He is the author of over 500 scientific papers, including 20 monographs. The winner of the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR (1972), Honorary Member of the Engineering Academy of the Republic of Kazakhstan (1991). He was awarded with orders and medals.
